The American Civil War touched down in Nicholas County, which became a turning point for the Civil War in 1861. Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park celebrates this history and allows visitors to explore Civil War sites along the Civil War Discovery Trail.

Summersville Lake is a destination for boaters, fishers, rock climbers and water lovers! It is the largest impoundment lake in West Virginia. The Gauley River National Recreation Area touches the lower left corner of Nicholas County as well.
